Harry Ellsworth Cole papers, 1837-1929.

Personal correspondence, 1900-1929, and answers to queries of Harry Ellsworth Cole, an editor of the Baraboo, Wis., News and president of the State Historical Society, leading to publication of his "Stagecoach and Tavern Tales of the Old Northwest" (Cleveland, 1930) and earlier publications. Among the letters a number are from Oscar D. Brandenburg, Madison, and other Wisconsin newspapermen and friends. Also included are notebooks of memoranda, drafts of articles, the original manuscript of the Tales book with a signed preface by Louise Phelps Kellogg, a typewritten copy of a lecture accompanied by lantern slides, and a copy of a memorial to Cole. The processed portion of this collection is summarized above. Additional accessions are described below.
